Success Means Total Abstinence from Caffeine, Alcohol, and Hot Spicy Foods

Two associated symptoms existed in 25% of patients.  Three or more symptoms were found in 75% of patients.  Patients were treated with a dietary approach that demanded total abstinence from caffeine, alcohol, and hot spicy foods.  Then all patients were reevaluated for their symptoms at the end of 12 weeks.  They were carefully instructed to avoid these “forbidden items” and to maintain 100% compliance as even a slight deviation could prevent resolution of their symptoms at the end of 12 weeks.  I considered my approach successful if each of their individual symptoms had disappeared.
