Why Does Inflammation Occur?

In normal circumstances, the inflammatory response is used by our bodies for protection.  With inflammation, blood cells called macrophages surround an area of injury.  It is the job of the macrophages and their chemicals to help repair damaged tissues.  We need the acute inflammatory reaction to stop the disease process.  Problems develop however if a chronic inflammatory response occurs.  A response defined as one that goes on for many months or even years — not just a few days.
